State Farm awards Habitat for Humanity in Monmouth Campus Chapters disaster service grants

rfh_campus_chapter.jpgMatawan, NJ – The Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapters of Rumson Fair Haven High School and Marlboro High School were each awarded a $11,100 disaster services grant from Habitat for Humanity International and State Farm®. These grants, totaling $22,200, will be used towards the “House that Youth Built” Campaign for the Henn Family of Port Monnmouth, a Habitat for Humanity in Monmouth County Sandy partner family.

“Our community was greatly affected by Superstorm Sandy,” said Junior Sarah Nelson, RFH’s Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter Co-Founder and President. “As students we recognized we could really make a difference to a family in need; applying for the grant was a no-brainer.  We are excited that several local schools are also participating in the “House That Youth Built” program.  We would like to thank Habitat for Humanity International and State Farm for this grant and for their help with rebuilding after Sandy.”

“After Sandy, our students were looking for ways to give back,” said Amy Colby, Marlboro High School Faculty Advisor and Habitat in Monmouth County board member. “This opportunity has really provided them with an amazing experience and we are fortunate to be able to help families like the Henn’s,” she added.

The “House that Youth Built” is a youth based service project that engages schools from Monmouth County to raise funds needed to help the Henn family rebuild their home in Port Monmouth. The campaign hopes to raise $60,000 to towards rebuilding the Henn home; the two State Farm grants will help towards this goal. Through the participation of more schools and youth organizations; Habitat in Monmouth hopes to raise an additional $40,000.

“State Farm has been a supporter of Habitat for Humanity since 1994.  Habitat for Humanity’s commitment to providing families with safe, decent, affordable shelter aligns with State Farm’s commitment to helping to build safe, strong, and better educated communities.  We are proud to present this grant to Monmouth County’s Habitat for Humanity chapter,” said Chris Thomas, a local State Farm agent based in Red Bank.

State Farm and Habitat for Humanity International are providing up to $100,000 in grants for disaster recovery projects that engage youth. In addition to providing Habitat affiliate support, State Farm has also served as the national corporate sponsor of Habitat for Humanity’s youth programs since 2007.
